FROM INTERNATIONAL CRIME TO PHOTOGRAPHY - WHAT?
Well, where should I begin...
I think this was the hardest part when creating my website. Not only because I struggled to find a picture of me since I am always the one taking pictures but also because my biography is a bit ... hard to summarize haha.
Long story short I studied in my hometown Munich sociology and cultural sciences with focus on Islam and then moved to Amsterdam in 2020 to do my Master at the faculty of law in international crime & conflict with a focus on war and terrorism. And yes, I am a full time portrait photographer now!
How come?
Since I was little I was obsessed with taking pictures. Already at the age of 7 I always took my parents camera and took portraits of everyone and always had a camera with me when we travelled. When I turned 12 my parents gave me a SLR Nikon D3200 - my first love. Combined with a 85mm I started with documentary photography and also became the school photographer at my school for the annual portraits and staff pictures. At age 18 I did a big trip for 100 days to the Himalayas (Bhutan), India and Vietnam. People even bought my photographies from that trip afterwards but somehow I didn't understand yet that this could actually be my profession.
I started to study in 2017 and my camera stayed in the cabinet until it got stolen during a break in in my apartment in Amsterdam Christmas 2021. That's when I realized how lost I felt without having my camera close. Somehow things changed after that incident. I finished my Master thesis and in the meantime people started approaching me and asked me if I am still taking portraits. I was about to continue my career in the field I studied but since multiple people approached me and I did some shootings on the side I started to feel the fire again.
One day I just biked to a camera store and bought a new professional Nikon camera and a 85mm again from my savings.
The last and most important incident that finalized my decision was when I travelled to Mexico and the happiness that overcame me when I travelled with my camera. During these 3 weeks I met many interesting people that encouraged me to become a professional photographer.
I sent out the mail to open my business while standing on a stone in Mexico city trying to get steady mobile network but I just couldn't wait anymore. The fire was on and I decided to follow my heart and passion even though I spent many years studying conflicts and human behavior.
I believe that one day I can combine these two worlds, use my skills to capture moments while having a lot of knowledge about the cultural context. I just realized that no one ever reacted emotionally to my academic papers I wrote but when I showed them pictures from that place people actually started to feel and engage. And this is my mission for now.
If it's in a conflict or just on the streets of Amsterdam. I live for making people feel seen and beautiful and I would love to hear your story!
