The Layaps of Laya are known for their distinctive dress and practice of polyandry. They also have rich animistic traditions and unique festivals ( such as the Royal Highlander Festival).


5. How do the Lunaps of Lunana sustain their livelihood?

The Lunaps rely on yak herding and high-altitude farming. Their homes and way of life are adapted to withstand the harsh Himalayan climate, ensuring their survival in one of the world's most challenging environments.


6. How long does it take to get to Laya?

Minimum 2 days from Paro via Gasa. There is no direct road available to Laya, you have to go by foot (or helicopter).

I can highly recommend the movie "Lunana" by Pawo Choyning Dorji (2019). This movie will give you a glimpse of the wonderful culture in Bhutan and the life in the Highlands.
