Storytelling and the art of capturing life through a lens
Discover the Hidden Beauty of Bhutan with Photographer Anna-Luisa Ballauf.
Imagine stepping into a land where ancient traditions come alive against a backdrop of breathtaking Himalayan peaks. Welcome to Bhutan, a hidden gem nestled between China and India. For centuries, this spiritual country has remained shrouded in mystery, but now it opens its doors to those yearning for authentic experiences and deep connections.
Join me, Anna-Luisa Ballauf, as we embark on a remarkable international group photography tour with Avila Reizen. This is more than just a trip; it’s a unique opportunity to explore Bhutan through my lens and forge meaningful connections with its people.
"I have visited the country several times and built a network of lovely, interesting and inspiring people and I feel like their stories have to be shared."
As we journey together, you’ll meet fascinating locals and storytellers who will share their insights into Bhutan's rich history and its heartfelt commitment to preserving nature. From learning about tiger conservation efforts to engaging with revered astrologers, you’ll gain a profound understanding of this enchanting land.
Highlights of Our Adventure:

Lunch with Monks and Nomadic Tribes: Experience the warmth of Bhutanese hospitality as you share meals with monks and families in their homes. These moments will touch your heart and fill your soul :)
-
Immerse creatively: Experience hands-on photography classes and creative sessions that invite you to truly connect with Bhutanese culture. As we journey together, you’ll capture stunning moments, create art (everyone can express themselves through art - you don't need to call yourself an "artist" to join), and jot down your thoughts, allowing you to return home with not just memories, but also your own artistic expressions and new skills. I'll push your creativity and will remind you that art is not just what we create, but also what we learn from the world around us.
-
Luxurious Accommodations: Relax in my carefully selected luxury hotels in Bhutan, each with a unique focus on well-being. After a day of adventure, indulge in spa treatments and local healing practices for the ultimate relaxation. These beautiful accommodations are a visual highlight, offering a level of luxury you've never experienced before!
-
TED Talks and Storytelling Sessions: Join us for meaningful conversations that foster genuine connections, allowing us to learn from one another and share our diverse experiences. Together, we’ll explore new perspectives that will enrich our journey and deepen our understanding of Bhutanese culture.
Itinerary
Day 1: Flight to Bangkok
We’ll kick off our adventure by departing from Amsterdam to Bangkok.
Day 2: Arrival in Bangkok
Upon arrival, take a moment to unwind at the Novotel Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport Hotel, preparing for the exciting journey ahead.
Day 3: Flight to Paro, Bhutan
Soar above the stunning Himalayas as we land in Paro, Bhutan (if you are lucky, you might see Mount Everest from the plane! I will make sure you'll sit on the right side). In Bhutan, you’ll meet me, ready to share my deep love for Bhutanese culture and help you capture the beauty around us. We drink some altitude tea, get used to the freshest air ever breathed and will listen to some local tales.
Day 4: Lunch with Monks
Visit the majestic Paro Rinpung Dzong and savor a delicious lunch at Eutok Gumba Monastery. This is a wonderful opportunity to photograph student monks and their unique lifestyle. I will slowly bring you into the world of documentary photography.
"In every encounter lies the potential for a story that can change our perspective."
Day 5: From Paro to Punakha
We’ll journey through Bhutan's bustling capital, Thimphu, and visit the Astrology College, making a picturesque stop at the breathtaking Dochu-La Pass along the way. In Thimpuh you will get the opportunity to get your fortune read by a professor of Astrology - I did it already and it was really eye-opening!
Day 6: Bhutan's Conservation Efforts
Spend the day immersed in Bhutan's tiger conservation program and talk to people that, in my opinion, change the world. Did you know Bhutan managed to double its Tiger Population?
Day 7: Archery Contest and Farmhouse Visit
Join in a traditional archery contest and enjoy lunch at a local farmhouse in Punakha—experience true Bhutanese hospitality ( and the delicious local cuisine)!
Day 8: From Punakha to Gasa
Travel through stunning mountain landscapes to Gasa, where you’ll witness the simplicity and warmth of rural Bhutanese life. Gasa can not be found on other Bhutan Tours since it is not part of the usual Tourist Route. I've been there last year and I can tell you - we are going to explore this gem which will show us the real life.
Day 9: Meet the Nomads
Explore the special and untouched Gasa region and meet members of the semi-nomadic tribes who call the surrounding mountains home. Their stories will inspire you.
"The journey is not only about capturing moments, but also about creating lasting memories with others"
Day 10: Return to Thimphu
We’ll head back to Thimphu, with plenty of opportunities for photography and sightseeing along the way. Whoever still has energy can join me for a "pub crawl" where we discover the fun and "gezellige" nightlife of the Bhutanese.
Day 11: Traditional Medicine
Visit a traditional healer who will share the wisdom of Bhutan's ancient medicinal practices. It's a unique entry into their holistic approach to health and might open your eyes towards your own body and health approach.
Day 12: Sky Burial at Chele-La Pass
Hike to a traditional sky-burial site, offering spectacular views of the Himalayas, and visit a serene nunnery along the way.
Day 13: Tiger's Nest Monastery
No trip to Bhutan would be complete without hiking to the iconic Tiger's Nest Monastery, dramatically perched on a cliffside. We’ll end the day with a special talk by Michael Rutland, one of the first foreigners invited to live in Bhutan, who will share his remarkable experiences.
Day 14: Flight to Bangkok
We’ll return to Bangkok for a final night at the airport hotel, allowing time to reflect on our unforgettable journey.
Day 15: Return to Amsterdam
As we fly back to Amsterdam, you’ll carry with you a treasure trove of memories and stories that will last a lifetime.
